Metztli Reiser4 Linux Cloud Kernel 5.3.10-2 on Google Compute Engine (GCE).

Following my recent build of reiser4 -enabled Linux kernel 5.3.10 wrapped in a Debian Packaging for kernel 5.3.9 hack, I happened to be customizing a VirtualBox 6.0.14 Metztli Reiser4 image for Google Compute Engine (GCE). I had installed the tlilxochitl, i.e., vanilla, regular kernel reiser4 -enabled into my customized VirtualBox instance image. Previous experience with one of the early cloud kernels spectacularly failing upon reboot in the cloud made me appreciate this 5.3.10 reiser4 -enabled cloud kernel successful boot.

Metztli Reiser4 Linux Cloud Kernel 5.3.10-2 on Google Compute Engine (GCE). — Replacing Metztli Reiser4 regular tlilxochitl ('vanilla') kernel with a cloud one.

After Metztli Reiser4 successful instantiation into the Google Cloud LA zone fabric, I decided to install the cloud kernel over the tlilxochitl kernel. Ensuing my initial attempt to install with dpkg, the output requested linux-image-cloud-amd64_5.3.10-2+reiser4.0.2_amd64.deb ¹, too. Thus I installed both:

dpkg -i  linux-image-5.3.0-1+reiser4.0.2-cloud-amd64_5.3.10-2+reiser4.0.2_amd64.deb linux-image-cloud-amd64_5.3.10-2+reiser4.0.2_amd64.deb

Upon Metztli Reiser4 reboot, we can see that the cloud kernel successfully booted into the Google Cloud LA zone fabric.

Although the snapshots were initially from a test image, we have been running custom cpu/ram Metztli Reiser4 in the range of 200Gb to 2TB image(s) for a while but this time with a jfs /boot and reiser4 -formatted / rootfs cloud kernel on Google Compute Engine (GCE)

¹ A cloud-specific Linux package (linux-image-cloud) allowed us to disable features that are not relevant in cloud environments and enable what is really important.

Good night. It took me a while to get here; I came from SF.net and it’s quite confusing post a message for you.

I’d like to know why the kernel package deb linux-image-5.10.0-4+reiser4.0.2-amd64_5.10.20-2+reiser4.0.2_amd64.deb is missing from the files for Debian 10 Buster. This is the only one that’s missing.

I’m interested in trying out the file system, and I’m not a developer. I’m writing this message with Google Translate, so please excuse my writing.

WE will try into Debian 10 Buster cos we already have a frexian service of 10 years with Debian so we count Debian 10 as still supported.

Please find the requested file at SourceForge, as I have just uploaded it. Fact is, initially most reiser4 users would install Debian from the Metztli Reiser4 netboot USB/ISO image and the file in question was fetched by the Debian Installer (d-i) from Metztli IT site.

Nevertheless, lately I have observed that user(s) download individual files to manually enhance their system(s), thereby increasing the complexity of reiser4 -enhancing their systems. Well, whatever their free will dictates ;-)
